One of the most common questions on damages to brick is on the chimney and piers. Bricks at the top of fireplace chimneys or piers have flaked off in some places due to water getting into bricks and then freezing. There are a number of ways this can happen.

What causes damage to brick used for window sills?
Periodic maintenance must be done on the window sills. This may entail recaulking between the wood sill and the brick. If this area is not caulked, water will seep through allowing brick to take in more moisture, thus causing spalling.
